Schafer: Triple-A games are "a pain in the ass", but fun

Double Fine boss Tim Schafer has said the developer will return to aking big retail releases one day, but isn't exactly keen on the experience.

"Those kinds of games like God of War or Brütal Legend are a pain in the ass to make. It's incredibly stressful," Schgafer told GamesIndustry International.

"You tear out your hair. You don't see your family. You make a lot of enemies to get something done."

Schafer said smaller downloadable games are a nice break from major projects, but eventually, the itch to embark on epic quests returns.

"But then you do start thinking about like a Brutal Legend - making that world and all those characters and stuff was... it's fun to make something big," he said.

Double Fine still has the resources to build big games, and Schafer reiterated that the company is still pitching to publishers.

"We have four teams and all it takes is to put two of them together to have a team the size that we made Psychonauts or Brutal Legend with," he said,

"I still like to make big fantasy worlds and I think we'll do another big game again. We're actually at DICE here pitching a pretty big game, so it's not about size, it's about what you do with it."

Double Fine took a break from triple -A development after the lacklustre reception of Brütal Legend, releasing a series of downloadable games including Stacking, Costume Quest and Iron Brigade. The developer has been the subject of much interest lately, having launched an amazingly successful Kickstarter to fund a new adventure game.
