Xbox One preview members can now use an over-the-air tuner in the US and Canada
Starting today in the US and Canada, members of the Xbox One preview program can get over-the-air TV by purchasing the Hauppauge WinTV-955Q along with an HDTV antenna.
According to Microsoft, in the next few months it will be partnering with Hauppauge to release a lower cost version the tuner, which at present will run you $79.99 through Amazon, Best Buy and GameStop among other retailers. The lower cost tuner, the Hauppauge TV Tuner for Xbox One, will run $59.99.
The tuner allows Xbox One owners to plug an antenna into a hardware tuner which is connected to the console. This will allow folks to watch local ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC channel through the console as they would with rabbit ears on their TV.
Using the tuner through the Xbox will also allow users to stream the content through their mobile device using the SmartGlass when connected to the same network.
It was also announced support for the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner to preview members has expanded to 11 other European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, and Switzerland. It will be made available at retail for these countries later in the year.
The Xbox One Digital TV Tuner is already available for those in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK.
