Xbox One: Microsoft shows rejected console prototypes
Xbox One's final design came after Microsoft toyed around with many prototype models, and now they've been shown and discussed by Xbox creative director Carl Ledbetter. Get a glimpse of what could have been here.
Speaking at the Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference 2013 last night, Ledbetter said of Microsoft's aims when conceptualising its Xbox One design, "We wanted to make it simple and elegant, and we wanted it to be crafted and tailored, so it's all about quality. Using those principles, we started to design."
The team then produced many sketches. Here's a snippet of the work they produced:
Using the sketches, the Xbox team then started to produce prototype models and started plonked them into everyday places like a person's living room, just to see how it'd fit.
Here's a selection of prototype models:
Ledbetter said while showing off the final Xbox One design, "This is where we start to apply things like gloss and matte finishes. How does the vent pattern look? How does the brand come through the front? How do we make the font look high quality, just like the high definition televisions in people's living rooms?"
He added that Microsoft came up with more than 200 designs for the Xbox One controller before resting on its final appearance.
We've also got a list of rejected names Microsoft was considering for the Xbox One here. Some of them are woeful.
