World of Warcraft Classic is probably quite some time away from release

World of Warcraft is finally (more or less) getting the vanilla servers that so many players have been asking for, but it's going to take time.

World of Warcraft Classic was announced during Blizzcon 2017, and is aimed at the fans who want to relive the original experience of growing from level 1 to 60 that the game's many players had back in 2004.

Blizzard wants to replicate the game from launch, but not necessarily the launch experience, which was plagued by server issues and bad net code. To do this, though, will take a lot of time and evaluation.

Of course, Blizzard is also working on the next World of Warcraft expansion, Battle for Azeroth, and generally has its hands busy. In an interview with Eurogamer, executive producer J. Allen Brack has made it clear that WoW Classic is still in its early stages, and will take some time to get going.

"The important announcement today was: we're doing this", Brack told Eurogamer. "When it comes to the details, we don't know all of the answers just yet." They're making the announcement early, he said, so that Blizzard has a chance to talk to the WoW community and figure out what they want Classic servers to look like.

Blizzard is hiring new people and teams to work on WoW Classic, so as to not interrupt development of the new content for the game, It's typical of Blizzard to not commit to a time frame, but Brack makes it clear that we shouldn't expect it in the immediate future. "This is a very, very significant effort", he says. "I would not expect it to be soon. We actually don't know when we're going to release it. I know that's a generic answer that we give for all of our Blizzard titles, but with this one, we don't actually know how long it will take."

Basically, expect to be waiting for a while.
