World of Tanks experimenting with wheeled vehicles after 1.0 launch
World of Tanks launched its big 1.0 update today, alongside its new in-house Core engine which brings the game up-to-speed with more current gen graphics.
Wargaming isn’t happy to just improve World of Tanks visually though, and plans to experiment with new gameplay elements like wheeled vehicles.
"We’re right now experimenting with wheeled vehicles that might be more agile and mobile than any tracked vehicles that were in the game," creative director Andrey Biletskiy told VG247 at a recent preview event in Prague. "If we will find the right positioning, we will definitely go into that area."
There’s been speculation about wheeled vehicles coming to World of Tanks for years, but it seems that Wargaming is being cautious with their implementation.
Wheeled vehicles would likely be fast moving and therefore require quicker reflexes to take down, even if they have poor defences. This has the potential to upset the patient balance of World of Tanks’ gameplay, which Wargaming has always maintained is more about chess-like position management and decision-making than twitch-shooting.
"What one should have to consider all the time designing a game like that is if something is not that big and moves quickly, it not only makes it interesting to play, it is also making it very hard to hit," Biletskiy said.
"So making something that will be faster and require more reflexes will affect not only people who are playing that, but people who are not playing that, who are interacting with that particular object.
"Will we continue experimenting and trying? Definitely yes. Because eight years ago when the game went live a person who was 35 and a person who is turning 35 now are very different people. From their gaming experience, what they used, how good they are with attack. With evolution, we will definitely try new mechanics and new approaches to make new game modes."
