Not even The Witcher 3's Switch launch can dethrone Fifa 20 in the UK charts

Turns out, more Brits are up for a kickabout in Fifa 20 than going off on adventures with pocket-sized Geralt.

Fitting the entirety of The Witcher 3 on the tiny Nintendo Switch must've been an intimidating beast to take on. But CD Projekt's efforts seem to have paid off. The game's Switch release week saw sales of The Witcher 3 soar 999% over the previous seven days, bringing it to number four in the UK charts. Not too shabby for a game released over four years ago.

But as impressive as that is, it wasn't enough to beat Fifa 20's five-week run at number one. Not that Fifa doesn't deserve it, mind. We called this year's annual football staple one of the best to date in our review, thanks to some pleasant footwork changes and the surprisingly "deep and fresh challenge" of VOLTA's street footy.

Fair enough. But The Witcher 3 didn't even beat out Ghost Recon Breakpoint - a game Kirk utterly loathed, yet somehow snagged third place this week. For shame.

The Witcher 3 wasn't even the best selling Switch game this week. That honour goes to Mario Kart 8 taking second place. It's been a good week for Nintendo overall, with Link's Awakening, Minecraft on Switch and the bizarre Ring Fit Adventure all making an appearance.

Ah well, Geralt. You might've been denied your throne, but you've still managed something properly impressive. Yes, there have been visual compromises - the resolution's a bit lower, and some snazzier effects have been downplayed. But as we said in our hands-on back in August:

“Yes it looks worse, but it fits in your pocket, shut up.”
