Witcher 3 Blood and Wine: How to Solve the Riddle in the Beast of Toussaint and Find Milton
We show you how to find Milton in Beauclair Palace's Gardens, as well as where to get the Hare mask in the Greenhouse.
Witcher 3: Blood and Wine features all manner of games, ranging from tournaments to boxing to the ever-popular Gwent, but one game you can't afford to lose is the riddle to find Milton's hiding location in the Beast of Toussaint quest. We'll take you through the process, and show the consequences of getting it right or wrong.
How to Find Milton
Milton is hidden somewhere in Beauclair's Gardens as part of a fancy gala game, not realising there's a serial killer after him. In order to find him, Geralt and the Duchess have to find three clues that'll reveal his location: an egg, a unicorn, and a golden fish. Once you have all of those, you'll be able to deduce where he is. The Duchess will find the egg, but Geralt as to get the other two.
How to Catch the Unicorn
Approaching the unicorn, it's made clear that this is just a rather skittish horse with a fake horn strapped to its head. Still, it's not going to be as easy as walking up to it, as your first attempt will end with the "unicorn" bolting before you can get to it and running off some way.
To catch it properly, use your Witcher Senses to find several people nearby having a picnic (the area to search will be marked on your map). Inspect the baskets around them until you find one filled with carrots or apples, then take it and equip it from your Quick Select Menu, like you would a crossbow or your spells.
Alternatively, simply approach it and cast the Axii spell. However, there is a chance this will prompt a fistfight with some courtiers unless you can calm them with Axii as well.
Approaching the horse now should go fine. There'll be a brief cinematic where Geralt takes its ribbon, then you can actually ride the unicorn to the next clue; the Golden Fish.
Where to Find the Golden Fish
The area to find the fish should be marked on your map, a wide area on the coast where several boats have people fishing out of them. You don't have time for that, so just dive into the water and start searching with your Witcher Senses again.
The "fish" are actually ceramic statues tethered to the button of the lake with chains, floating in place. There'll appear red when you use your senses, though not if you're too far away. Once close enough, you can search them like any other container. The fake ones will just have candy inside, but the real one should prompt a cinematic when you get close enough. The fish you want is in the one in the South-West, close to the beach. If you find it quickly, you'll get an extra 100 experience. Otherwise there'll be a brief clip where two other people get it first, then Geralt just snatches it off them. Either way, it's progress.
How to Solve the Riddle
Return to the courtyard where you split up from the Duchess and you'll have the riddle in full. It goes thusly:
"I begin like a groan hollowed out with ease,
Then end like a mouse with a head of hard cheese."
It's not an easy riddle (or a very good one), but the answer is a Greenhouse. If you get it right, you get 200 experience. Get it wrong and there'll be no reward, but it won't lose you the quest; instead the Duchess will just work it out for you and things keep going.
How to Find the Greenhouse and Get the Hare Mask
Once you've completed the riddle, the game will automatically take you to the greenhouse, then to a new location across town for a boss fight. However, you can return to the greenhouse afterwards to get the Hare Mask that Milton was wearing, lying in the middle of the floor. This'll go into the quest items section for you to wear whenever you want.
