Will the Warcraft movie fix Hollywood's poor treatment of games?
It could even bring back players to the original MMO's dwindling fanbase.
The movie business is well known for taking a video game franchise, ripping its heart out, and slapping it up on the silver screen for a quick buck.
For years your favourite game, hero, villian, first love and way of life has been crushed into two hours of bad scripting, miscast acting and cheesy dialogue. Maybe it's too much to ask that 100s of hours of video game lore can be successfully interpreted for the big screen.
But maybe it isn't. Hollywood has finally got its head around genre fiction. Marvel's movie output is a credible, enjoyable and successful run of movies that pleases the comic book heads and the mainstream masses.
There's other reasons for hope, not least that it's directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) with a screenplay co-written with Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond, K-Pax).
And it could help generate interest in World of Warcraft, a monster of an MMO that has been losing subscribers. It's no longer the behemoth it once was, and it's by no means failing, but with Blizzard refusing to discussing subscriber numbers, everyone involved with the game - players and developers - could benefit from renewed interest in Azeroth.
What do you think? Will the Warcraft movie stand as a credible and successful film in it's own right? Can it finally bless video games with the kind of treatment they deserve? Could it prompt you to return to the MMO that used to suck so many hours of your life? Let us know below.
