Wii U year-end sales have been steady, claims Nintendo president Iwata

Wii U software sales may have failed to set the charts alight, but the hardware has been selling steadily across all territories, but has fallen short of matching its predecessor in terms of year-end sales, according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.

Speaking with Reuters, Iwata stated, "At the end of the Christmas season, it wasn't as though stores in the U.S. had no Wii U left in stock, as it was when Wii was first sold in that popular boom. But sales are not bad, and I feel it's selling steadily."

Iwata went on to reveal that Nintendo is aiming to shift 5.5 million Wii U devices by the end of the current fiscal year - the end of March. The latest sales figures, released in December placed UK Wii U launch sales at 40,000 units US sales at 400,000 units and Japanese launch sales at 300,000 consoles sold.

Regarding Nintendo's next bout of financials, Iwata told Reuters that the weak Yen would not have much impact, but cautioned that it would affect its foreign assets. The site noted that as of this morning, Nintendo's shares had fallen by 2.1% at 8,980 yen. They have dipped 15% since the Wii U launched.
