"Whenever I create a game it's still like my own child is being born," says Sakaguchi

Mistwalker's Hironobu Sakaguchi, who is also the father of Final Fantasy in case that hasn't been drummed into your head by now, has compared creating games with a child being born - in that any game created by he and his team is like an "extremely beautiful" child to them.

"Whenever I create a game it's still like my own child is being born," he told Eurogamer. "The Last Story took three and a half years to complete and all of the staff members put their all into creating the game. Our child is extremely beautiful.

"We have a lot of love for the game. I am extremely satisfied with the outcome."

Sakaguchi said that normally during development, he would divide his time in three week intervals between Hawaii and Japan, but for The Last Story he "spent three months in Tokyo followed by just 10 days in Hawaii" - a repeating pattern for three years.

"Even though we have video chat these days I still prefer to be in front of the team," he said. "There are times when I suddenly come up with an idea. I've always felt that when you are gifted with an idea you have a responsibility to carry it through, to make it into something."

The Last Story is out in the UK and will release on Wii in the US sometime this summer.
