We'll see new Final Fantasy games in 2018, which will be a 'big year' for the series
Square Enix is gearing up for a big year of Final Fantasy releases.
2017 was the 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy; we saw mobile games, heaps of updates to Final Fantasy 14 and 15, and some odd curios like the FF15 VR fishing expansion. It looks like we'll be seeing more Final Fantasy experiences next year, too.
This news comes via the folks at Edamame Arcade Channel, and their interview with Final Fantasy brand manager Shinji Hashimoto, embedded below. While the interview is largely about the Final Fantasy trading card game, towards the end Hashimoto starts talking about the future of Final Fantasy, and the games on the way. "Next year is going to be a big year", he says. "Our teams are working on some new titles. They are gearing up for a big year next year".
It's possible that this refers to the Final Fantasy games we already know are due next year, like Dissidia Final Fantasy NT and Final Fantasy 15 Pocket Edition, but there's also a part of the interview where Hashimoto asks (jokingly) when the interview will be dropping, in a way that suggests the company has more announcements to make.
The interview ends with Hashimoto promising that the team "will bring exciting, new Final Fantasy games to the world".
The elephant in the room here, of course, is the Final Fantasy 7 remake. We speculated back in April that it might release in the first half of 2018, but that seems unlikely now that we've seen nothing new for such a long time. In May, Square Enix was hiring additional staff to work on the game, which might be split across multiple parts.
Hopefully we'll get some more substantial details on Square Enix's plans for Final Fantasy in 2018 soon.
