"We’d done all that we could" with old Tomb Raider, says Crystal Dynamics
Crystal Dynamics has said the reboot of Tomb Raider is a much needed one, saying all avenues from the old series were exhausted after the release of Tomb Raider: Underworld.
Crystal Dynamics took over the series after the infamous Angel of Darkness and made three games in its wake: Legend, Anniversary and Underworld.
But speaking with VG247 at E3, art director Brian Horton said it was time for a change following the release of Underworld in 2008, but also keep remnants of what made the series what it was in the first place.
"We’d done all that we could do with that version of Tomb Raider and we needed to think about Lara in a fresh way," he said to us.
"We wanted to keep the same tenants of an action-adventure game but put them through a new filter and so the origin story bubbled up from that.
"By having a period of incubation, we’ve been able to revitalise not only the tone and mood of the game, but also the mechanics and the way the game plays in order to make it more relevant for today’s gamer."
Tomb Raider launches on March 5, 2013 for PS3, 360 and PC. Look out for a full preview from the show by Stace Harman soon.
