Watch Dogs 2 is the first modern Ubisoft game to not feature towers
It's a brave new world, a world where a Ubisoft open-world game won't require us to climb towers to reveal missions.
Ubisoft games have, regardless of their quality, caught considerable flak in recent years due to developers' overuse of the climb-towers-to-reveal-activities mechanic.
This particular feature became a staple of the company's games, finding its way into all of Ubisoft's big franchises, including Far Cry, Assassin's Creed. Even the original Watch Dogs had a similar mechanic.
Thankfully, the developers of Watch Dogs 2 will be the first to break this combo. Speaking to Eurogamer, creative director Jonathan Morin confirmed that the game will have not have towers.
"It's not a game where you open your map and everything's there," said Morin. "There are no towers. You just explore the world."
Instead, Watch Dogs 2 opens itself up (unlocking more things to do) the more the player gains fans and followers for DedSec, the in-game hacker group.
"Every time you get followers, it's like you're unlocking the DedSec hivemind. You're also unlocking new knowledge, new operations, new co-op missions. And then organically you hit those end-game milestones," he added.
This also ties into one of the goals the developers had for Watch Dogs 2: for each player's version of San Franciso to be free.
"You can barely touch the story. You have many different operations which give you followers, which guide your progression," Morin explained, adding that there'll be three "milestones" you need to hit to wrap up the game's story.
"But, mathematically you can unlock everything else through co-op or free-roam."
Watch Dogs 2 is out on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 15.
