After 20 years, you have just one more month to wait for Wasteland 2

Wasteland 2 has a release date, after more than 20 years of waiting.

Wasteland 2's release date is September 19, inXile boss Brian Fargo said on Twitter today.

The crowdfunded CRPG is sequel to a 1988 game from Interplay. Fargo has wanted to make a sequel pretty much ever since the first game launched, and it was only thanks to the travails of licensing and rights that he instead went on to work on the Fallout series, a spiritual successor.

Wasteland 2 was one of the first really high-profile Kickstarters to follow in Double Fine Adventure's wake, and even in the initial pitch video Fargo made no bones about the fact that he was sick to death of publishers only wanting to fund huge massive hits.

InXile has worked closely with its community since crowdfunding - communicating frequently, running an extensive beta, taking feedback very seriously and even crowdsourcing some assets.

Now, inXile has a second project on the go - Torment: Tides of Numenera, another much-request CRPG sequel. Whether inXile can sustain itself through post-release sales of Wasteland 2, back catalogue sales and future crowdfunding projects remains to be seen, but it seems to be giving it a red hot try and succeeding so far. In he meantime, we get the kind of games a publisher would probably never fund. Hooray!

Wasteland 2 is coming to Linux, Mac and PC. Here it is on Steam.
