VR: Unreal Engine to add HTC Vive support

The biggest digital PC game distributor and the most popular game development engine have both backed VR. It's going to happen.

An upcoming Unreal Engine 4 update will expand the development suite's support to the HTC Vive, Valve's VR headset.

In this glorious new future where work on one of the most important engines in the world is largely conducted in the public eye, you can tune into Epic's UE4 Roadmap Trello and keep an eye on new VR projects in progress. You can SteamVR support has recently been noted on the documentation card.

Unreal Engine 4 already supports Oculus Rift and Gear VR, as well as Sony's Project Morpheus. New features for Morpheus are on the way in the next Unreal Engine update as well.

HTC Vive was revealed in early March. It's just one of a number of quite exciting VR developments from Valve, including Lighthouse, which allows developers to use a whole room as a VR stage. Valve is giving this tech away for free, along with HTC Vive development kits, to encourage the growth of VR.

Unreal Engine and Valve. By their powers combined, we may get this glorious new future off the ground after all.
