VietDoom is the love-child of Apocalypse Now and id Software

One Veteran Doom modder has taken it upon himself to create a new Doom campaign set during the 1968 Vietnam War that takes inspiration from the classic Francis Ford Coppola's war film Apocalypse Now. But, you know, Doom style.

VietDoom - an upcoming 10 map demo from modder Sgt_Mark_IV - is a total conversion of the classic id Software game, replacing nearly all elements of the original game with new assets and audio that puts you in the shoes of an American soldier within a pixelated Vietnam jungle. It is "pretty much an adventure re-imagining Apocalypse Now's story," says the modder.

And of course, in full Apocalypse Now style, VietDoom's latest pre-alpha trailer comes complete with The Rolling Stone's Paint It Black (albeit, a MIDI rendition). You can check out the footage below.

VietDoom is loosely inspired by games like NAM and Rising Storm Vietnam -  combining jungles, accurate period weapons, and lots of gore and burning things.

The initial campaign demo will feature relatively realistic mission types, from rescuing missing prisoners of war, to search-and-destroy targetting, and ambushing convoys.

But in classic Doom form, the full campaign - which is expected to take some years yet, as it is the work of just one developer - will have a supernatural twist. "[B]ecause this is Doom," says Sgt_Mark_IV, "and anything related to Doom needs to have some demons."

VietDoom's campaign demo will launch later this year. In the meantime, check out some of Doom's most psychedelic mods.
