The Associated Press is reporting that computer-related college enrolment is down by 50 percent this year in the US.

The problem is especially troubling as many of the so-called "baby boomers" are hitting retirement age, leaving a tough-to-fill gap in the market, says the report.

"There's a bit of a perfect storm going on," said Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology, a California-based consulting and staffing service.

"I do think it's serious and I do think we need to start at the elementary school level and get students talking about math and science."
