UK government will look into whether loot boxes should be classified as gambling

It's possible that loot boxes will soon be considered gambling in the UK.

The UK government will soon call for evidence regarding loot boxes and whether they are considered gambling.

According to the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) the government body will be calling for evidence later this year (thanks, GI.biz).

The body will be looking into the impact of loot boxes as the pandemic and the lockdown measures prompted another look at the items, which have been a source of contention among various government bodies for quite a while now.

A statement from the DCMS provided to GI.biz states the evidence it is calling for will "provide a solid foundation for future steps," and a review of the Gambling Act will follow. The UK government said it will also contribute to further research using the "framework set by the DCMS."

Back in October, a UK commissioner’s report insisted that loot boxes be classified as gambling. In it, Children’s Commissioner for England Anne Longfield called for loot boxes to be included in gambling legislation and urged game makers to set daily limits to curb spending sprees.
