By the end of this month, the game will hit the milestone, wrote studio head Darrell Gallagher.

"At launch we set franchise records for the fastest selling day one and month one in Tomb Raider history," he said. "With the positive word of mouth and continued commercial momentum it’s great to see Tomb Raider on course to become the best-selling game in the history of the franchise.

"This would be a crowning achievement for the teams around the world, and one that we have our sights firmly set on.

"Like every great adventure, the story continues long after the initial launch. It’s great to be able to look back at the last twelve months and share some of the achievements we are really proud of. We can’t wait to continue our adventures with Lara in the sequel that is in development at Crystal Dynamics."

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition was released earlier this year on PS4 and Xbox One.

Last year, Square announced a sequel to the Tomb Raider reboot for next-gen was “well into development”.

The comic Tomb Raider #1 picks up where the events of the 2013 game left off, and as previously reported last year, may lead into the sequel.
