Tomb Raider info comes stumbling out of GI
Didn't take long, did it?
GAF's carrying the first info of the Tomb Raider reboot from Square Enix, announced yesterday, that's in the latest issue of Game Informer.
But this ain't going to be your standard reboot, by the looks of it. The entire Tomb Raider brand, not just the franchise, will be getting the entire redeux treatment, according to the mag.
The game is a prequel to the entire Tomb Raider story, where we see a 21 year old Lara Croft stranded on an island following a shipwreck. GI's already said we're going to see Croft "endure both physical and emotional trauma to survive."
The targeting system from past games has also hit the bin, with developer Crystal Dynamics now implementing a free-aim system.
Tomb Raider will see the inclusion of base camps. Here, you'll combine items and get access to a skill system that will allow you to upgrade Lara's abillities.
If you had the thought of survival horror in your mind about the game, you're half-right: you'll need to collect food and water to survive on the island.
"I think that the major difference between this game and the old is the concept of smoke and mirrors," said Crystal Dynamics boss, Darrell Gallagher.
"There was an illusion of freedom because of streaming and loading that would pop you out in a different location, but this is absolutely real. You can literally go any direction that you see and carve your own way to the finish line instead of being guide."
"It was important in the game to not only deliver the character arc of Lara Croft emotionally, but to deliver it in gameplay as well so the player gets to grow into a hardened survivor," added director, Noah Hughes.
And there you have it. There's more here.
Square didn't announce a release timeline or platforms yesterday, but the game's official website confirms it'll release on PS3, 360 and PC.
