There's a new VR shooter from the Metro team, but you'll need the pricey Oculus Touch to play it
Three new games have been announced for Oculus Rift and its Touch controllers, including a new project from Metro series developer 4A Games.
From the maker of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light comes Arktika.1, set in Russia in the aftermath of the apocalypse. Expect both snow and mutants to feature in this "big, atmospheric VR shooter" when it launches in the second quarter of 2017. 4A Games said the project is a "full-blown AAA title".
Lone Echo comes to us from Ready At dawn, the team responsible for The Order: 1886, and although the teaser above is all atmosphere and no action it's apparently some sort of multiplayer sport experience. Okay, sure. No release date for this one.
Finally, here's Robo Recall, a new game from Epic based on the Bullet train demo. A stylish action shooter, it will be free to all oculus Rift owners when it releases in early 2017.
Now for the bad news: all three of these games require Oculus Touch, the new motion controllers designed specifically for the VR headset.
Why is that bad news? Well, early retail rumbles that Oculus Touch would be pretty pricey have turned out to be largely correct: a pair of controllers will go for $200.
The controllers launch in the US on December 6, and will come with a necessary second tracking camera. Oculus also recommends you purchase an additional (third) sensor for best results at room-scale, which will cost you an additional $80.
Maybe if you can shell out $600 for a VR headset then a further $280 doesn't seem like much to you, or maybe the total package cost of $880 makes you eye off the HTC Vive's $800 price tag with less disbelief. Gosh, Sony's decision to future-proof DualShock 4 with VR-ready light bars doesn't seem so frivolous now.
If you are keen, pre-orders for the Touch open 12:00pm PT October 10. Those who pre-ordered the Oculus Rift have priority status, provided they order before October 28.
