The Outer Worlds will be enhanced on Xbox One X, but not PS4 Pro
The Outer Worlds will, strangely, offer 4K enhancements only on Xbox One X.
The Outer Worlds, Obsidian's upcoming action-RPG is, like most big-budget games today, going to offer an enhanced experience beyond what's available on the base PS4 and Xbox One.
While this is common, what isn't is that only one of the two consoles will get these upgrades. In this case, Xbox One X owners will see these enhancements, but PS4 Pro players will not.
An Obsidian spokesperson confirmed this to Windows Central, saying the game will support "4K on Xbox One, no enhancements for PS4 Pro."
This is certainly odd, but not completely surprising. During The Outer Worlds' development, the studio was acquired by Microsoft to join its growing Xbox Game Studios label. It's possible this relationship allowed the developer to enhance the game for Xbox One X, where it would not have received upgrades on either console otherwise.
Obsidian is a relatively small studio, after all, and even something like offering these enhancements would have taken up precious development time the then-independent studio would want to spend developing the game.
The Outer Worlds is out October 25 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, so expect reviews to drop next week.
