Nintendo is not going for an all-digital console with the upcoming NX.
The Nintendo NX will have physical media, says GameStop CEO
According to GameStop CEO Paul Raines, the Nintendo NX will continue to use physical media. Raines said as much in an answer to an inquiry during the company's most recent earnings call.
"I would say that the fact that there are rumours of that type just confirms for you that this is an important console for next year," Raines said.
"It will have physical media, we will play a role in it, our pre-owned business will also play a role. So we’re excited about that."
GameStop's Mike Mauler then chimed, saying that if that media would take a the form of cartridges, it would be no issue for the retailer's pre-owned business. This particular point is interesting, because a recent rumour from Japan suggested that Nintendo is ditching optical discs in favour of cartridges.
"The only difference would be on the refurbishment and pre-owned side. And actually, cartridges are much simpler to refurbish and repackage. o there is somewhat a little bit of an advantage if it went in that direction on used," he added.
Though this all sounds interesting, with the way Nintendo has been with regards to talking about the NX, we likely won't find out if this is true until we're a lot closer to launch.
