The most recent PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds patch brought big performance drops, Bluehole investigating

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds may not have had any big patches for the live build in a while, but a number of smaller updates were released over the past few weeks to improve the game's anti-cheat measures.

Though these patches were small compared to the massive 1.0 build that spent a few days on test servers, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds players noticed a big change in performance and lag.

The issues have been reported over the weekend, but increased to the point that the game's subReddit dedicated a thread to gathering all reports, which typically happens when an issue is widespread enough.

The problems all revolve around degradation of the game's performance. In most cases, this comes in the form of frame-rate drops, whereas in others, it's stuttering that affects looting and every other function in the game.

According to one Reddit user, the cause for these performance issues is Themida, a tool that prevents tampering with .exe files. "I'm not really sure why they moved to this. Themida virtualises code which results in around a 2.5-20% performance loss (leaning more towards 20% in this case)," said Reddit user Bennyh6813.

Sammie Kang, marketing and events manager for the game, has since confirmed on Twitter that the team is aware of the reports, and will "investigate soon."
