The map in Just Cause 3 is 1,000 square kilometres
Just Cause 3 is enormous. Surprise!
The latest Just Cause 3 developer diary is all about the challenges and opportunities of working with huge open worlds.
In an accompanying press release, Square Enix said the game's map, the Mediterranean island of Medici, is is one of the largest in open-world gaming at 1,000 square kilometres. That means it's a little under 32 km wide*.
Although we don't have official sources on game world sizes, several years ago a couple of comparative game maps did the rounds. The first claimed Just Cause 2's map was about 20 miles wide, or roughly the same size as Just Cause 3's and much larger than GTA San Andreas, Far Cry 2 and Oblivion. Pretty impressive, although dwarfed by games like Lord of the Rings Online and The Elder Scrolls 2: Arena on the second map.
It'd be great to get some updated, confirmed maps like these showing Skyrim, Far Cry 4 and GTA 5.
Anyway, however you look at it Just Cause 3 is sodding enormous, and launches for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on December 1.
*I think. I didn't become a games journalist because I was great at maths.
