The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game differentiates itself from similar games (eg. Hearthstone) in its focus on solo and cooperative play, rather than PvP, according to Timothy Gerritsen, studio head at developer Fantasy Flight Interactive.

Players build a 30-card deck including three heroes, some of whom are iconic characters like the pipe-smoking wizard Gandalf. The game is rooted in Tolkien's lore, and explores the time period between Bilbo's retirement and the start of Frodo's journey in The Fellowship of the Ring. Players will confront Sauron's forces, ranging from giant spiders to trolls, and story-specific events will occur mid-conflict that Gerritsen says will make conflicts more difficult.

"As committed The Lord of the Rings fans, we strive to keep the game rooted very firmly in the world that Tolkien created," Gerritsen says.

In addition to the narrative-driven campaigns, The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game also features Encounters – scenarios designed for players who crave a little extra challenge. These scenarios are steeped in lore, too, and Gerritsen says they'll take you to places like the Misty Mountains and the ancient fortress at Gundabad.

The game launches on August 8 for PS4 and is currently available as a Steam Early Access title. It will also be available soon as an Xbox Game Pass title for PC.
