The Legend of Zelda going multiplayer "maybe next year"

The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has seemingly confirmed an upcoming release will feature multiplayer.

The Legend of Zelda's most recent product is the upcoming spin-off Hyrule Warriors, a Dynasty Warriors crossover allowing two players to go on adventures together. This has re-opened the quesiton of multiplayer in a core Zelda game. Speaking to GameInformer, Aonuma made a tantalising comment on this very subject:

"When I was talking back about making Zelda more than just a single-player experience? That’s something you will see in the future, maybe next year," he said.

We know that The Legend of Zelda Wii U is coming in 2015, so it's easy to assume that Aonuma is hinting that the new game will feature multiplayer. Unfortunately, we can't be sure - goodness knows if Nintendo has other Zelda experiences planned, with more dramatic departures from the series formula. After Hyrule Warriors, we believe anything.

Wouldn't it be amazing if Link's new, blue shirt look indicated there will be multiple versions of Link running around, as if the franchise's multiple universes and timelines had collided? Including the mythical but heartbreakingly brilliant FemLink?

Thanks, Ausgamers.
