Naughty Dog’s next game will either be The Last of Us Part 3 or a new IP

Could we be getting The Last of Us Part 3 or an entire new game from Naughty Dog?

Uncharted 4 felt like the perfect wrap up for Naughty Dog’s adventure game series and I’d be completely happy if it ended there. It seems like the developer feels the same way as it begins to think about what the studio might tackle next.

In an interview with GQ, Naughty Dog spoke about diversity, subverting expectations, and even personal inspirations behind The Last of Us Part 2’s story. But there’s also a little tease as to what the future might hold for Sony’s most prestigious studio.

“As you start wrapping things up, creatively there are fewer and fewer responsibilities and my mind can't help but think about the next thing,” creative director Neil Druckmann said. “So yeah, the next thing could be a Part 3, the next thing could be some new IP.”

Elsewhere, Druckmann is looking forward to the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, helmed by Druckmann himself and Chernobyl’s creator, Craig Mazin. The pilot will also be directed by Johan Renck, who directed all of Chernobyl.

Druckmann says the show “really lets us focus on the characters and the drama and show you other aspects of those characters.” Perhaps we’ll see more of Joel and his daughter before the events of the game’s prologue, and maybe we’ll get more context into Joel’s murky past. Whatever the case, the talent behind the show has me incredibly excited to watch it when it eventually happens.

Reviews for The Last of Us Part 2 land this Friday and you can check out the latest gameplay trailer at that link. The Last of Us Part 2 releases on June 19. Druckmann also spoke about the importance of diversity for storytelling.
