"The era of dedicated handheld gaming platform is over," says LG CEO

LG CEO and president, Dr. Jong-seok Park, is of the opinion that the "era of dedicated handheld gaming platform is over," now that the South Korean electronics company has released its glasses-free Optimus 3D mobile in the country.

"The era of dedicated handheld gaming platform is over," said Dr. Jong-seok Park in a press release. "Today's smartphones have the horsepower to compete with the best portable gaming devices and LG Optimus 3D is our proof.

"We think 3D is the natural next step in portable entertainment and LG is eager to throw its hat in the ring with the Optimus 3D and Gameloft's 'must-be-seen-to-be-believed' titles."

After this statement was issued, according to CVG, the firm sent out an amended press release just stating: "Today's smartphones have the horsepower to compete with the best portable gaming devices and LG Optimus 3D is our proof."

Gameloft president Michel Guillemot added: "The most recent data shows iOS and Android devices capturing a growing part of the portable gaming market by revenue. With the next generation of smartphones offering 3D capabilities, the bar has been raised to a new height. On the Optimus 3D, we're able to offer our most popular titles to an entirely new audience at very competitive price points."

The glasses-free device comes pre-installed with Gameloft's Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, N.O.V.A. and Let's Golf!, and 14 additional 3D games will be made available from Gameloft on the phones for half the price over the next three months.

These titles include: Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles, James Cameron's Avatar, Shrek Kart, Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, Real Football 2011, Star Battalion, N.O.V.A. 2 and Shadow Guardian.
