The Division no longer has a companion app

Do you remember The Division's companion app? Oh yeah, that's been cancelled.

The Division, like many of the games announced in 2013, was pitched as having a second screen experience. The game's companion app was said to have more functionality than your typical phone app, allowing players to actually play the game alongside those playing on consoles, controlling drones and dropping buffs on players on the ground.

Today, the game's developer, Massive, told IGN that the companion app has been cancelled. They added that it "created an imbalance" which compromised the gameplay experience.

Originally revealed at E3 2013, The Division exists in two interesting periods of game development. The first is one when publishers were obsessed with mobile devices and their ability to be part of the experience, however ancillary. The other one is very sober, after having realised that nobody wanted to fiddle with their phones while playing a game on their consoles.

The Division is due for a beta later this year, with the official release being March 2016.
