The Behemoth: BattleBlock Theater isn't "trying to be like any other game"

The Behemoth's Kelly Revak has said the firm's BattleBlock Theater isn't "trying to be like any other game," including the team's popular title Castle Crashers.

Instead, according to Revak, the game is unique from anything the firm has done prior, and is both competitive and ooperative at the same time - something Revak doesn't believe all games do rather well.

While it's easy to understand why people would be wondering just what BattleBlock Theater is, considering the strange but utterly amazing, evil cat-filled trailer Behemoth released for it back in March, but Revak told NowGamer that once players "get" the game, the fun seems to ramp up for them.

"The first few times we brought BattleBlock Theater to shows, we saw that people were having a ton of fun with the game, but they were confused much of the time, followed by this “AHA!” moment," said Revak. "From studying how people were approaching the game, we were able to allow players to reach that satisfying moment earlier, and really crank up the volume on what was the most fun about the experience.

"The central mode of the game has you and up to three fellow performers platforming, puzzling and cat-fighting your way through hundreds of levels with the same basic objective: Find three gems and put them in your pocket, then find the door and you can unlock it. Quite conveniently, the levels themselves will be different depending on how many performers are on stage, so one player can have just as much fun as four. There really no such thing as a 'typical level' in this game.

"While players are jumping and diving and not dying their way across the stage, they may be called upon to herd strange creatures, collect the ghostly souls of their enemies or, perhaps, just find the exit in one piece."

There's a possibility that some mini-games will make their way into the final build, and Kevak said that by having a "bunch of different modes," in the game, there will be a number of different ways for people to play.

"We hope to cater to a broad spectrum of players," said Kevak. "Some pit players directly against one another while others encourage more indirect interaction. So, whether you prefer pushing people off of hilltops or racing to collect gold as it pops out of a flying whale, we’ve got something for you.

"I wouldn’t call any of the modes 'side attractions', just different ways to experience the game."

There's no date just yet, but BattleBlock Theater is slated to land on XBLA.
