Here's how cyberspace looks in the System Shock remake
We got our first look at Nightdive Studios's interpretation of cyberspace in the System Shock remake over the weekend.
Nightdive debuted a new trailer for the System Shock remake, showing off the new cyberspace. In the original System Shock, cyberspace was meant to represent the experience of being inside a computer, battling firewalls and programs. It was a minimalist, surreal environment.
But that was 1994, and cyberspace looked more like something out of Tron, all wireframey and grid-shaped. The System Shock remake keeps some of those general aesthetics, but turns the gameplay into 6DOF, similar to Descent. As you can see, the character moves freely inside the 3D space, and it actually makes programs a bit more threatening.
This is still a suitably alien environment, just rendered at much higher visual fidelity. You're even still shooting out those shuriken-looking things. At the very least, combat in the remake's cyberspace looks more exciting than confusing.
The System Shock remake still doesn't have a release date, but there's a Steam demo you can download and play right now.
