Survival-RPG Fade to Silence announced at The Game Awards, mixes harsh survival with Lovecraftian monsters
At last night’s Game Awards, THQ Nordic revealed Fade to Silence - a new survival-RPG from Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams developer Black Forest Games.
Fade to Silence will be available on Steam Early Access from December 14, 2017. There’s been no word on a console release yet.
“As the player you take the role of Ash, a natural but tormented leader. In that role you explore a post-apocalyptic, frozen wasteland to gather the resources necessary to establish a refuge for survival,” Black Forest Games said.
“With dwindling resources, simple tasks like upgrading equipment and collecting materials quickly require an expedition to scavenge the necessary items. In the search for survival materials, players must navigate a vast territory, in which they will encounter Eldritch monsters and an even greater foe: the unrelenting winter.”
From launch, Fade to Silence will include eight square kilometres of frozen wasteland to explore, a tiered combat system spanning ranged and melee weaponry, and a wolf-sled for forging expeditions into the wilderness. Here’s hoping for upgradable doggos.
Fade to Silence seems to be a bit more story-focused than traditional survival fare, with Black Forest Games describing it as a “character-driven, group survival experience”. The game will also have a moral choice system, where players can save and recruit allies from the world as well as making “harsh choices” in an effort to survive the cold.
Combat also looks to be significant part of Fade to Silence where, as well as the climate, Ash has to contend with shadowy, glowing-eyed creatures. Black Forest’s references to “eldritch” hint at some Lovecraftian influences. We only know about something called a “Ripper” with “gigantic claws” so far - but the flowing black tendrils visible in the trailer are very Lovecraft.
