Now that the lid has well and truly been lifted on Super Smash Bros Ultimate, we can start taking a more detailed look at some of its features. The headline feature is, of course, that every single character from Smash Bros. history will return for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This means that there are a staggering 74 characters to contend with, many of which have received pretty significant changes since the last game. In this Super Smash Bros Ultimate Ness Guide, we’ll be taking a look at the Earthbound character, and seeing what has changed, what has remained the same, and what we can expect from Ness' Moves set and his final smash.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Ness Guide
Ness, the main protagonist in Earthbound, is back once again for Super Smash Bros Ultimate. He has seen a number of changes since then, including general updates to his animations and moveset. We’ve got all of the changes to Ness when compared to the last game, so let’s take a look and see what’s new.

How to Unlock Ness in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Unlike previous Smash games, fighters are unlocked in the same way for all, rather than character-specific challenges. This means that while it can be a bit of a grind, all you need to do is play the game naturally and you’ll eventually unlock all of the characters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. We’ve listed the three ways you can unlock characters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate below:
- Playing the World of Light single-player mode.
- Completing Classic Mode with a character.
- Playing the ‘Challenger Approaches’ fights that appear regularly, you will need to win them.
The fastest method involves triggering the Challenger Fights by reloading the game regularly. We’ve listed the method below:
- Quit to the home screen and Restart the game.
- Create a match with a custom rule set.
- Make sure the match is 1 minute long, or 1 stock if you'd prefer.
- After finishing the match (you can win or lose) you will offered a new Challenger Fight.
- You'll need to win the Challenger fight
- Repeat.

Ness Changes in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
There are a number of changes to Ness since the last game. Many of them are pretty subtle, while others will have a larger effect on the way he handles as a fighter. We’ve listed all of the changes to Ness in Super Smash Bros Ultimate below:
- Ness’ yoyo now says “Super Nintendo 2018 Mother” on it
- Victory pose is altered
- Faster dashing
- New idle animation
- PK Starstorm final smash now similar to the one used in Brawl
- Faster air speed
- Down Throw now uses the PK Fire effect
- Up Air attack is completely different and resembles Peach’s
Ness Alternate Costumes in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Ness’ alternate outfits are very similar to what they were in Super Smash Bros for Wii U. They mostly just change the color of his striped t-shirt or hat, with none of them presenting any significant changes.
Ness Final Smash in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
As mentioned earlier, Ness has had a few changes in terms of moveset. His final smash, PK Starstorm has been altered slightly, appearing more as it did in Super Smash Bros Brawl. The asteroids move slower, but spread out over a larger area, a stark contrast to Smash Bros Wii U’s fast and tight barrage of asteroids.
