Super Smash Bros. 3DS multiplayer requires a day one update

Super Smash Bros. 3DS hopefuls should grab the day-one patch before throwing their 3DS against the wall and shrieking "why can't I play online?"

Super Smash Bros. 3DS arrives in North America as soon as the calendar clicks over to October 3, and has technically already released in Europe.

You can't just fire it up and leap online immediately, though; you can't use multiplayer until you install the day one patch.

There are two ways to grab the patch. The easiest way is to make sure your 3DS has up to date system software and then scan the QR code on this Nintendo support page.

"Alternatively, starting Nintendo eShop on a Nintendo 3DS system that is displaying Super Smash Bros. on the HOME Menu will show a list of software with update data available, from which you can select and download the update data," Nintendo advises.

"On the Super Smash Bros. Ver 1.0.2 page, select 'Tap Here to Download.'"

The patch notes are quite brief, stating only that the update "enables online multiplayer features" and that "adjustments have also been made to balance the game and make for a more pleasant gaming experience".

You'll need adequate space on your SD card to download the update.
