Nvidia, Windows 10, 1080p dominate the Steam September survey

The results for Steam's September survey are here, giving us a general overview of the hardware and software Steam users use the most.

Steam published the results earlier, with the typical breakdowns for operating system, GPU, CPU and other main components.

Unsurprisingly, Windows 10 64bit is the most common operating system on the platform, with a 60.17% share. Windows 7 64bit is its closest competitor, with 30.01%. The various Linux, and Mac operating systems combined make up less than 1%.

On the hardware end, the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 is the most popular GPU, with a 13.81% share, followed by the GTX 1050 Ti at 9.37%. Both GPUs saw growth in usage in September, but in both cases it was less than 1%.

That said, Nvidia continues to dominate the top ten and beyond. In fact, Intel's HD Graphics 4000 saw more use than the most popular AMD GPU. VRAM between 2 and 4GB seem to be the most common, which makes sense considering 1080p is by far the dominant desktop resolution.

It's so far ahead of all other resolutions, with the closest being 1440p with a meagre 3.59%. 4K makes up a tiny 1.32%.

VR headset owners may be disappointed to find out that all of them combined amount to less than 1% of Steam's users. Oculus Rift, which has historically been the less popular among Steam users, has inched its way to the top of the pile with 0.34% compared to the Vive's 0.31%.

Check the link above for the full results, but do keep in mind that some of the data may be skewed. Steam typically asks all users to do the survey, regardless of how many PCs they use Steam from. It's also entirely optional.
