State of Decay 2: here's over 25 minutes of 4K Xbox One X footage
If you're an Xbox One owner hungry for an exclusive game, the next one isn't too far away - and it's got some nifty Xbox One X enhancements too.
State of Decay 2 is a neat little open-world zombie-bashing survival game where up to four players can take on a brutal, unforgiving world of the undead. The idea is that you're not just dashing from safe house to safe house in a linear fashion, but rather you're working to manage and build up a community of survivors, with your excursions out into the world driven by your need to ensure your people are supplied for and properly cared for.
Last week we got to go and play the game for a few hours - and in the process came home with a bunch of footage of it in action. Take a look for yourself:
In the video you'll hear myself and Matt discuss exactly what I thought of the game, including thoughts on its seemingly worrying problem with rough netcode and bugs just a few weeks from release. If you want to read impressions in more detail we've got an entire lengthy State of Decay 2 preview for you to peruse, but the short version is that in spite of bugs the game has quite a unique and interesting approach to post-apocalyptic zombie survival that's really refreshing and incredibly compelling once it clicks.
Thanks to brutal difficulty around management and the many plates you have to spin to keep your survivors alive and happy, State of Decay 2 manages to deliver a different kind of tension for a zombie game - less about the horror of getting eaten and more about the horror of your enclave of survivors not having enough food to eat. It's a solid twist that served the first game well, and the sequel just seems to be turning those ideas up to eleven with larger maps, more zombies and more intricate interlocking and interacting systems to worry about.
With most survival games now taking a hard turn into the world of battle royale, it's refreshing that State of Decay 2 is staying far away from that genre and providing a more traditional survival experience. The video will give you a better idea of what it's like than my nattering, though, so check out our 30 minutes of footage above, recorded in 4K from an Xbox One X development kit.
