Starbound pre-order campaign smashes through $600,000

Starbound developer Chucklefish has amassed over $600,000 in pre-order funding for its sandbox world-builder.
The rolling total over on the Starbound pre-order hub keeps going up and up, suggesting that its Kickstarter-esque format really is working. The method is similar, offering different reward tiers and incentives but remains completely independent of Kickstarter.
Starbound places you as an alien forced to leave its home planet behind, and it's up to you to help it gather resources and make a new home in an abandoned space station. It has retro-style visuals and a rather charming tone. It will enter a PC beta phase later this year.
