Star Wars: Battlefront franchise "multiplayer at its core," DICE won't "f*** it up"
With Star Wars: Battlefront, despite its vast experience with multiplayer games, DICE is well aware avid Battlefront fans won't cut the studio any slack when it comes to doing right by the franchise. This caused the team to feel an enormous amount of pressure when development started.
Speaking with Gamespot during E3 2015, DICE boss Patrick Bach said he's never heard the phrase "don't f**k this up" so much in his life.
"It's a different pressure, and of course it's stupid for us to put ourselves under more pressure," he said. "There's a very avid Star Wars following, who all want Battlefront to be great. So that's where it starts. We get it, don't f**k this up.
"Before you show a game to the world, there's ongoing speculation about it. There are 10,000 ways to f**k this up, and people are super detailed on how we will screw up."
Bach said the team has reached a point where its worrying less about what it's "doing and what it has done," and feels fans are going to be pleased with the final product. EA has previous said it's adamant about releasing a good product, to the point it won't hesitate to delay Battlefront if it isn't up to snuff.
During the interview, Bach also reiterated that single-player was never "in the plan" for Star Wars: Battlefront, because the team wanted players to "re-live the battles" and that is what "Battlefront stands for."
"If you look at what Battlefront stands for, it's to recreate these battles," he said. "The Battlefront franchise has multiplayer at its core. But we've also added in some offline missions, that you can play alone or with a friend. [It's] about the world and the actions. The sights and the sounds. That is exactly what we're giving you.
"But we are building these small missions too. If you like our world and mechanics, but you don't want to play with strangers on the internet, then you can still enjoy this game."
Even though Battlefront won't feature a single-player campaign, players can go solo via offline “crafted missions” using AI bots or play with a friend via split-screen offline or through online co-op.
Along with the two-player splitscreen mode is a Partner feature which means both players can “share experience and unlocks” as well as spawn at each other’s location.
Last week, DICE showed the first the first ever gameplay footage of the multiplayer during EA's E3 2015 press conference.
Star Wars: Battlefront is slated for release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One November 20.
