Star Wars: Battlefront 2 multiplayer to survive GameSpy shutdown

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is one of the casualties of the Gamespy shutdown, but GameRanger has stepped up to save the day.

According to an update to the classic Pandemic shooter's Steam page, LucasArts owner Disney has elected not to continue multiplayer support post-Gamespy shutdown.

"As of May 31, 2014, online functionality, including network multiplayer and wireless chat, will no longer be available for this title. We regret any disappointment as a result of the shutdown of the services supporting these online features," an update noted.

However, GameRanger already supports the title, and will continue to do so; by downloading the antipodean service's free client, you can continue playing regardless.

On Reddit, GameRanger boss Scott Kevill said he's already tested the game with a simulated Gamespy shutdown and had no issues.

GameRanger is also going to host Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo: Combat Evolved Demo and Halo: Custom Edition; Microsoft has ceased support for these titles.
