Star Citizen reaches $5 million with 17 hours to go

Roberts Space Industries has had to add another stretch goal to its already stretched crowd-funding campaign after combined totals from its Star Citizen campaigns topped $5 million.

The Kickstarter page has brought in over $1.7 million while the primary, self-hosted program has acquired more than $3.3 million.

As a result, Star Citizen can now boast a record for greatest total raised by a crowd-funded game.

The project initially asked for $2 million and has been adding stretch goals every few days as the numbers continued to soar.

The latest stretch goal is $5.5 million, which will unlock the Bengal carrier, add professional motion capture to military sim component Squadron 42, and reward every backer with 1,000 credits and an exclusive Record Breaker skin.

At $6 million, Roberts Space Industries promises 100 star systems, a full orchestral score, and a free copy of the first Squadron 42 mission disk, a 16 mission affair called Behind Enemy Lines, for all backers.

The last two milestones, $4.5 and $5 million, unlocked a new system, 70 systems and 50 missions at launch, hardcore flight sim controller support, playable destroyers, a Vanduul trading post base, a tablet application, increased community updates, town hall meetings with Chris Roberts and celebrity voice acting with "at least one returning favorite" for Squadron 42.

There are just 17 hours left on the clock; check out the end of campaign livestream.

Star Citizen is expected on PC in late 2014. Perhaps its time to revisit the sim's rousing trailer?
