Square Enix "currently assessing" issues with Chrono Trigger Steam release
Revered as one of the best RPGs of all time, Chrono Trigger’s PC release on Steam hasn’t quite gone to plan, with the game sitting on a “mostly negative” (39% positive) review rating.
In an effort to address some of the backlash, Square Enix took to Chrono Trigger’s Steam news page to say that they were looking into the problems, and asked fans to be vigilant for updates.
Their full statement is as follows:
“Hi everyone, thank you for the feedback you've shared so far regarding Chrono Trigger.
“We wanted to let you know that we are reading and listening to your messages and are aware of all of the issues that you've raised, which we are currently assessing. Please keep an eye on the Steam page for further information.
“Thanks for your patience and support, the Chrono Trigger team”
The issues seem to stem from the fact that the game available on Steam is a port of the mobile version released on Android and iOS (for a third of the price), retaining the visual compromises and touch controls that allowed the game to run on phones and tablets.
Our own Alex Donaldson outlined just some of his problems with this iteration of Chrono Trigger, saying:
“There’s a characterless font, touch-based control elements that remain present even when using a controller, an unceremonious booting to a system-level text input box every time you need to name a character and an awful smudgy vaseline filter that’s applied to the game’s beautiful sprite artwork. It’s a disaster.”
When it hit Steam last Tuesday February 27, the initial buzz of excitement around Chrono Trigger quickly turned to anger.
Chrono Trigger was originally released in 1995, and was universally praised for its complex and engrossing story, memorable soundtrack and well-designed characters. It comfortably made our list of the best RPGs ever made.
