Square Enix closes its Core Online streaming service

Square Enix has ended its Core Online game streaming service just 18 months after it launched. In fact, it ended in November, but with little fanfare.

It comes from a note on the Core Online homepage that reads, "Core Online was released as an experiment to see what demand there would be for HD games played via the browser. However, due to limited commercial take-up of this initiative, Core®Online closed on Friday 29th November 2013."

Core Online enabled gamers to stream HD editions of games like Hitman: Blood Money, Mini Ninjas and Tomb Raider: underworld in their browser for a monthly $2.99 fee, or for free for 20 minutes per day.

Square has confirmed that any subscriptions still active during the November closure will be eligible for a full refund.
