Spelunky world record "impossible", says astonished creator
Spelunky creator Derek Yu has expressed amazement at Bananasaurus Rex's new world record, commenting that he thought such a score was impossible.
"He achieved the impossible," Yu told Polygon.
"As in, we were so confident that an over 3 million score was impossible that pre-patch, the game actually thought you were cheating if you submitted a score that high. I'm going to have to watch the video to see how he did it."
You can watch the video, too: Bananasaurus Rex took 7.5 hours but managed a Spelunky world record high score of over $3.1 million this weekend thanks to a couple of really lucky finds in the early acts.
Yu also said that when the game initially launched it had a few small cheat-prevention tools built in to keep the leaderboards clean, and he arbitrarily chose a cut-off he believed generous enough to allow for over-achievers.
"3 million was the cap we set initially for score, because the [world record] on Xbox was something like 2 million. Getting another million seemed pretty far-fetched at the time. I guess not," he said.
Just a reminder that Spelunky was developed in GameMaker: Studio, which is free until March 2.
