Sony reiterates you don't need Neo to use PSVR but you do need 61-square feet of clear space
Sony has reiterated that while PlayStation Neo has upgraded specs, it is not a requirement for PlayStation VR. Also, it's been suggested that you remain seated whenever possible.
Speaking at ACGHK 2016 in Hong King this week, Sony Worldwide boss Shuhei Yoshida assured all PSVR titles would be playable on current PlayStation 4 consoles now and in the future.
“We believe that everyone can enjoy the entertainment content on PSVR,” said Yoshida and the conference, per PSU. “Not just gamers, but a lot more people enjoy PSVR.”
His statement echos those made by Sony's Jim Ryan at E3 2016 in June.
An advertising brochure posted on reddit backs both comments up further in the FAQ section titled "What do I need own to experience PSVR?"
As expected, the section notes a PS4 is required along with the PlayStation Camera and that some games require either DualShock 4 or PlayStation Move controllers.
Noted in the brochure as well was information pertaining to the amount of clear, square footage needed in order to have the best experience using the headset.
The PS camera needs 9.8ft x 6.2ft (3.0m x 1.9m), approximately or 60.76 sqft (5.70 sqm), of clear space and all objects which could be picked up by the camera or obstruct it removed from the area (thanks, MCV).
"Limit your use of PS VR to within the Play Area. The height of the Play Area depends on the range captured by the camera. Clear an area larger than the Play Area of all obstacles before using PS VR and remain seated whenever possible. If an application requires you to stand while wearing the VR headset, follow the application instructions carefully and maintain awareness of your surroundings."
If you look over the rest of the pamphlet, which is posted on imgur, it also notes that spectators sitting in the room with with the VR user will be able to see what they see, but only in 2D, obviously. PlayStation Asia has posted the same information.
During E3, Sony announced PSVR would be released on October 13 for $399/£349/€399.
There are over 230 developers working on content for the headset and there will be 50 games releasing between launch and the end of 2016.
