Sony adds media player to PS4

And it's launching today.

The pre-show warm-up for Sony's E3 event dropped a long-awaited announcement: finally, the PlayStation 4 is getting a media player.

It's available on the PlayStation Store today, with a feature set familiar to anyone who's used the PlayStation 3 equivalent, including the ability to play music in the background while you're running other apps.

The player is capable of streaming files over your local network from any DLNA-compatible device, or you can plug thumb drives into the USB ports.

Check out the PlayStation blog for a full list of supported codecs and file formats.
