Smurf's Village poised to overtake Angry Birds on iOS revenue charts
The long reigning Angry Birds suffered a nasty scare this week, as Smurf's Village charged the iOS charts with its eye on the catapulting avians' crown.
Gamasutra reports on the iDevice revenue charts, which track profitable titles, as opposed to public facing best-sellers lists.
Rovio's Angry Birds topped both the iPhone and iPad lists, managing a second entry on each, but the intensely lucrative and hard-fought iPhone chart gave second spot to Smurf's Village.
Smurf's Village is a Farmville-style free app from Capcom Mobile, supported by micro-transaction purchases of upgrades and in-game items.
This drawn-out and potentially sustainable financial model is so rapidly minting it that Capcom recently declared smartphones the future of portable gaming.
In contrast, Angry Birds draws revenue purely from the cover price - making its constant domination of the charts a remarkable achievement.
