Skullgirls 2nd Encore brings exclusive new features to PS4, Vita in northern summer

Skullgirls, the little indie fighter that could, is getting another crack at it.

Skullgirls 2nd Encore is the second re-release of the one-time troubled 2D versus fighter from lab Zero Games.

Having survived the shut down of its developer and collapse of its publishing contrast, Skullgirls re-emerged as Skullgirls: Encore, adding in a ton of content backed by a very successful crowdfunding campaign.

The hungry team at Lab Zero Games wasn't satisfied, though, and is going to have another go. The new version is coming to PS4 and Vita in northern summer with a bunch of new features. First of all, the story modes will feature full voice acting.

A new Challenges mode imposes interesting modifiers to battles, like no jumping while facing off against Big Band. Trials mode tests players' ability to perform commonly used in-game combos, and should provide a useful training tool. The new Survival Mode lines you up against endless enemies, regenerating health based on your performance in the preceding round.

Lab Zero is hoping to bring these new features and content to the PC version as DLC, but hasn't promised anything yet.

Meanwhile, the re-release also include a new Platinum trophy set, cross-play with all three PlayStation platforms and previous versions of Skullgirls, PS3 peripheral support for the PS4 version (this tech was licensed by NetherRealm for Mortal Kombat X), PS4 Vita cross-buy, and a free PS4 theme with pre-orders.
