Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding has kicked off
As promised, a crowdfunding campaign for Eternal Darkness successor Shadow of the Eternals has kicked off, giving first details of the episodic adventure.
Precursor Games is hosting the campaign on its own website rather than through Kickstarter; this is a move that worked well for Star Citizen, which has raised the vast majority of its funding independently, although it's a shame the project will miss out on the extra publicity Kickstarter generates. On the other hand, the campaign's FAQ suggests the game will be made even if its target is not met, with Precursor Games keeping all contributions - something Kickstarter does not allow.
The independent developer is seeking $1.5 million by June 7, which will secure the release of the first, CryEngine-powered episode in the third quarter of 2014, for PC and Wii U.
"Featuring an ensemble cast, Shadow of the Eternals will span over 2500 years of human history. Players will question their own perception of reality as they progress through this mind-altering psychological horror," Precursor said in a press release.
The campaign is offering a number of rewards and incentives as well as the chance for backers to contribute to the game itself. Visit the site to peruse the options, and check out the teaser and pitch video below.
Precursor Games is a new team led - but no CEO's - by Denis Dyack, the head of Silicon Knights. Silicon Knights produced Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, to which Shadow of the Eternals is a spiritual successor, and is said to have had a working prototype of a followup in the works before the studio got caught up in financial troubles due to a lawsuit over Too Human. The developer's future is unknown.
