If Sega hasn't given up on Dreamcast games, neither should you
The Dreamcast is one of the most-loved consoles ever to end up a failure at retail, and Sega is keeping the dream alive.
Although the Dreamcast itself has succumbed to the march of time, some of its games live on. The console that gave us D2, Shenmue, Seaman and Space Channel 5 had a vast collection of wonderful titles, and although many of them appeared on other platforms, purists will tell you the Dreamcast versions were the best.
Some of these games are now available on Steam, allowing you to relive (or maybe explore for the first time?) the treasures of a sadly truncated platform lifespan.
Sega could probably have put these ports up and then called it a day, but instead it continues to support them. Earlier this month, it alerted Steam fans to ongoing work on the Dreamcast Collection, for example.
"You may have noticed some new things crop up in our existing Dreamcast collection on Steam, such as achievements," the publisher said.
"Currently this content isn’t accessible but it’s part of an initiative from SEGA over the next few months which is going to improve the player experience for these titles.
"We don’t have an exact date for these improvements just yet but please bear with us, we’ll keep you posted with more information just as soon as we’re able to."
That's above and beyond the call of duty on ports of games that are more than a decade old and probably aren't generating much revenue. Kudos, Sega, for applying a little balm to the wounded hearts of Dreamcast lovers everywhere.
